[Home]Secret Museum

The Secret Museum is an organization devoted to seeking out and gathering together occult objects and documents from around the world. Among its permanent collection are the lost manuscripts of [Jorge Luis Borges] and the bronze-crucible of [Benvenuto Cellini].

The organization has no headquarters as such. There is no physical museum. The collection is deemed too important to keep in one place so the items are distributed among Secret Museum scholars all over the world. Some are in museums, some are in private homes, but all are under the care and protection of members of the Secret Museum. The only physical location owned by the SM is an apartment in one of the older New York brownstones. Several artifacts are kept there, but the real "artifact" is the apartment itself, which was home to Alestair Crowley for about two weeks during his stay in the USA. In that time he drew on almost every flat surface of every room. Some of the diagrams are unique modifications to the tree of life and there are several diagrams which are still not understood at all. When the landlord saw the state of the rooms he was horrified but was convinced to sell the property, without repainting, by a rich Crowley "fanboy". The property eventually found its way into the hands of the SM.

The mission of the Secret Museum is perhaps unique. The items in its catalogue are not pursued for their own sake, but for the magickal formulae and principles they embody. There is little point in leaving these objects laying around, since they are, typically, powerful enough to be dangerous, or subject to a process of cultural erosion that robs them of meaning. Secret Museum scholars spend a great deal of time "unlocking" or "decoding" these artifacts, teasing out of them what knowledge can be gained. If successful, the scholar (or team of scholars) is responsible for disseminating that knowledge in the most appropriate way. In most cases, the object itself is destroyed. Objects in the permanent collection are those which, like the Crowley apartment in New York, no one can figure out. The ultimate goal of the Secret Museum is to destroy its entire collection.

While the acquisition of artifacts is meticulously recorded, no one keeps track of what happens to them once they're acquired. No known memberships rolls are kept, though it is rumored that copies of it exist, encrypted using methods only madmen can understand.

None of this is any particular concern to Koyne. As a roving curator, his job is to acquire things that people want.
